Frequently Asked Questions

Who is the Post-Baccalaureate Program designed for?

Students with a bachelor’s degree who need additional coursework to earn initial teacher licensure in Massachusetts without pursuing a Master of Education program.

What does the Post-Baccalaureate Program include?

Required courses, MTEL exams, and a practicum experience.

What are the application requirements for the Post-Baccalaureate Program?

Prospective students can apply online at connect.westfield.ma.edu/apply/

What materials are required for my application?

  1. Completed application with $50 fee
  2. Official transcripts from all colleges/universities attended
  3. Two letters of recommendation (one academic reference strongly encouraged)
  4. Passing Communication and Literacy MTEL scores
  5. Portfolio or audition for certain programs: Visual Arts requires a portfolio review; Music requires an audition

When are applications due?
The program has rolling admissions, so applications are accepted year-round.

Do I need to take courses at Westfield State?

Yes, students not previously enrolled in Education courses at Westfield State must complete at least six credits before their practicum.

Is financial aid available?

Yes, financial aid options are available for eligible students. Visit our Cost and Aid page to learn more.

Would a Master of Education program be better for some students?

Yes. For many, earning licensure through a Master of Education program is helpful long-term, as Massachusetts requires teachers to move toward professional licensure within five years. A Master of Education can also increase teacher pay.

When might an initial Master of Education program make more sense?

If you don’t have a background in education, an initial Master of Education program may be shorter and more efficient than completing a post-bac program first.

I’m not sure whether to apply to the Post-Baccalaureate Program or the Master of Education program. What should I do?

Students are encouraged to speak with an advisor to determine the best path. Please contact graduate@westfield.ma.edu or 413-572-8461 for assistance.
